APBA Offshore's All-New Boat Racing Categories

SUPER CAT CLASS
Class Designation: Numbers only
Boat: Twin-engine inboard catamaran
Length: 38 to 40 feet (Note: 6-inch tolerance rule does not apply. Boats that were registered with APBA Offshore during the 2000 racing season will be grand-fathered for competition in 2001 and beyond.)
Tunnel Width: 66" maximum.
Weight: 9,500 lb
Description: Replaces former Unlimited, Open, USA Class 1 and Modified boats. Must be produced from dedicated hull and deck molds. No custom fabricated one-of-a-kind hulls.
Speed: Estimated straightaway speeds of 135 mph on calm water.
Engines: Twin 510 CID naturally aspirated engines. Single spec. 795 CFM King Demon 0/00 carburetors. Spec aluminum Brodix heads and intake systems. Estimated 750 hp each, roughly the same as a Winston Cup race car. No modifications to the heads and intakes will be allowed. All repairs to the heads must be performed by Brodix.
Drives: Mercury/MerCruiser SSM VI dry sump drive is the only homologated drive.
Cost: Estimated $500,000 to $750,000

SUPER CAT LIGHT/INBOARD
Class Designation: Numbers only
Boat: Twin-engine inboard-powered catamarans
Length: 30' to 37'6" (Note: 6" tolerance does not apply.)
Weight: 6600 lb to 8650 lb (depending on length and engine)
Description: Factory production catamaran boats with factory production engines and drives. Safety canopies are optional due to increased top-end speed. Concept "Ski on Saturday...Race on Sunday"
Speed: Estimated straightaway speeds of 115 mph on calm water.
Engines: Twin Mercury Racing HP500 or HP500 EFI only.
Drives: Mercury Brove stern drives or MerCruiser SSM VI drives.
Cost: Estimated $175,000 to $225,000

SUPER CAT LIGHT/OUTBOARD
Class Designation: Numbers only
Boat: Twin and triple engine outboard-powered catamarans.
Length: 28' to 37'
Weight: 3800 to 5500 lb (depending on length and engines)
Description: Class combines twin engine Super Stock and triple engine Pro-Stock Classes from 1999 and prior years.
Speed: Estimated straightaway speeds of 110-115 mph on calm water.
Engines: Stock Mercury 2.5 Offshore engines (approx. 275 hp each)
Cost: Estimated $120,000 to $220,000

SUPER VEE
Class Designation: Numbers only
Boat: Twin engine inboard V-bottom
Length: 38 to 43 feet
Weight: 9000 lb
Description: Must be produced from dedicated hull and deck molds. No custom fabricated one-of-a-kind hulls.
Speed: Estimated straightaway speeds of 120 mph on calm water
Engines: Twin 510 CID naturally aspirated engines. Single spec. 1150 CFM King Demon 0/00 carburetor. Spec aluminum Brodix heads and intake systems. Estimated 800 hp each, roughly the same as a Winston Cup race car. No modifications to the heads and intakes will be allowed. All repairs to the heads must performed by Brodix.
Drives: Any homologated drive system is allowed provided 100% of the propulsive force is derived from the water.
Cost: Estimated $350,000 to $500,000

SUPER VEE LIGHT
Class Designation: Numbers only
Boat: Single inboard V-bottom
Length: 28 to 33 feet
Weight: 5000 lb
Description: High-tech canopied A Class boats -2000 and prior years.
Speed: Estimated straightaway speeds at 95 to 100 mph
Engines: Single 510 CID single carburated engine. Spec 730 CFM Race Demon 0/00 carburetors. Spec aluminum Brodix heads and intake systems. Estimated 650 hp each, roughly the same as a Winston Cup race car. No modifications to the heads and intake will be allowed. All repairs to the heads must be performed by Brodix.
Drives: Any homologated drive system is allowed provided 100% of the propulsive force is derived from the water.
Cost: Estimated $150,000 to $200,000

FACTORY 1 CLASS
Class Designation: F1-
Boat: Single engine inboard V-bottoms
Length: 24 to 29 feet
Weight: 4100 to 4975 lb (depending on length and engine)
Description: Factory production V-bottom boats with factory production engines and drives. No modifications are allowed except for minor changes to interiors and seats. Concept is "Ski on Saturday...Race on Sunday"
Speed: Estimated straightaway speed is 80 mph on calm water
Engines: (spec class) single Mercury Racing HP500 or HP500 EFI only

OUTLAW A
Class Designation: A-
Boat: Single engine non-canopied V-bottom boats
Length: 24 to 32 feet
Weight: 4000 to 4800 lb (depending on length)
Description: Outlaw C Class boats from 2000 and prior years.
Speed: Estimated straightaway speeds 80 to 85 mph on calm water.
Engines: Inboard production production 510 CID with 9.5:1 compression and single four-barrel carburetor or factory fuel injection. Or inboard modified 470 CID with 12:1 compression and single carburetor or factory fuel injection. Super Vee Light engines (as described earlier) or twin outboard performance engines (Mercury 2.5L Offshore race engines)
Drives: Any drive providing 100% of the propulsive force is derived from the water. Must be capable of shifting Forward-Neutral-Reverse with engine running. No dry sump drives, crash boxes or multi-speed transmissions are allowed.
Cost: Estimated $125,000 to $150,000

OUTLAW B
Class Designation: B-
Boat:
Twin engine non-canopied V-bottom boats
Length: 30 to 39 feet
Weight: 7200 to 8250 lb (depending on length)
Description: Non-canopied B Class boats from 1999 and prior years
Speed: Estimated straightaway speeds 90 to 100 mph on calm water
Engines: Twin production 510 CID with 9.5:1 compression and single four-barrel carburetor or factory fuel injection. Also can be powered by triple Mercury 2.5 Offshore outboard engines.
Drives: Any drive providing 100% of the propulsive force is derived from the water. Must be capable of shifting Forward-Neutral-Reverse with engine running. No dry sump drives, crash boxes or multi-speed transmissions are allowed.
Cost: Estimated $175,000 to $225,000

OUTLAW PERFOMANCE
Class Designation: P1-, P2-, P3-, P4-, P5-, PV-, PX- Speed Bracket Classes
Description: Formerly Local Classes. Great for beginners. Almost any boat and engine combination will be allowed in the Outlaw Performance Classes 1-5 as long as they meet strict safety standards and fit into one of the speed bracket categories. Speeds are checked periodically throughout the race by radar and any boat exceeding the top speed of their bracket is disqualified. To be eligible for the World Championships, the team and its crew must have competed together in a minimum of two APBA Offshore events.
