The Results are in for the Old Saybrook Between the Bridges Powerboat Poker Run, which was held July 24, 2010 on Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay. The action began on the rain-drenched Friday and while the fleet looked thin, “all the boys” came out with the sun on Saturday for a spectacular fun-filled performance event.
After a 27-year hiatus from producing boat races in the area, the National Powerboat Association (NPBA) was back in Old Saybrook, CT., to produce this 75-mile poker run.
The event officially commenced Saturday morning during the drivers meeting, which outlined the rules and regulations of the extensive course, which led the players to The Pavilion Beach Club in Old Lyme to Orient Point, Montauk Point, New London then back to the Connecticut River.
Following the driver’s meeting, the group paraded to the starting line led by Old Saybrook’s finest, Detective Sgt. Gene Heiney in the police boat. The Connecticut DEP escort boat also joined in for the parade. In their wake was the Official Pace Boat of the event, Ken Kleitz’s ‘TSUNAMI’, an original 33 Sutphen driven by Chris Cestaro of Ocean Performance and throttled by Billy Frenz (NPBA executive director and ‘OUTRAGEOUS’ 1980s throttleman). The duo was accompanied by the NPBA flag girl, Allison Frenz.
